Yes, we know they look great, but there are several downsides to getting fake nails. For those of you who love the look, this probably won't change your mind, but we're still going to make you aware of the negatives of going with acrylics:
It can be dangerous! As your nails grow out, a gap can form between your natural nail and the acrylic—this can provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria! This can also happen if you're getting your acrylics done at a salon where unsanitary equipment is used. Look for signs of infection like redness, swelling, and seeping. But if you're still gung-ho about your acrylics, be sure to go to a salon that displays a current license, sterilizes its tools, and make sure your technician uses a new file every time!
Not only can bacteria and fungus form between your real and fake nails, but the chemicals used to apply acrylics, like formaldehyde, can be dangerous as well.
You become a slave to your nails: For those of you with acrylic nails, you know exactly when you need to get them redone. If you don't go every two weeks, you really start to notice the re-growth! They require constant maintenance and unlike a natural manicure, it's hard, if not impossible, to touch them up at home.
The buffing from electrical tools can be seriously rough on your nails, nail beds, and cuticles.
Once you decide to take your acrylics off after a while, you will definitely notice your nails will look and feel weaker, and be much more prone to breaking. Dryness from prolonged wear can also cause your nails to split or crack.
